Richard writes and produces the material, plays guitar and keyboards, and programs. He is assisted on projects by other musicians.
A member of the PRS, Richard has been involved in composing and producing music for multimedia and videos for more than twenty years, and has had works released on vinyl, CD, CD Rom, websites, library tracks and DVDs, across the globe.
Inspired by seeing a film of a sixties group (possibly the Merseybeats) ‘in the round’ (early version of 360 surround video and sound) he decided that that playing music in a pop band was more fun than playing football and pestered for a guitar. Early influences were the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall and Cream.
After gaining some basic competence, he then played in various bands, from pop to heavy rock, playing the various social clubs and pubs of the West of Scotland. He then progressed to playing more acoustic material and eventually studied classical guitar while at Edinburgh University. After further studies in London he then taught professionally for five years, in Glasgow and London. He has also had a career as a teacher, lecturer, technologist and as director in various media businesses.
Getting involved in production, Richard established and ran an 8 track analogue studio for several years, providing demo services to local musicians and this helped develop a deep understanding of the production process, and its role in bringing to life material in every style - everything from folk to goth rock. Since then he as been involved with many productions for library tracks, as well as co- productions and co-writes with artists in the UK and abroad, mainly in the dance genre.
Richard hobbies outside of music include reading, food and wine, (ie eating and drinking) swimming, walking, watching sport and various other educational and business pursuits.
Some say his material sounds more west coast American, than west coast Scottish - there’s certainly more than a tinge of sun drenched US climes, evoking those 60’s and 70’s Electra artists like the Doors and Love. Others might detect more of a UK flavour blending Roxy Music and Phil Collins – but whatever, his magpie talent as its own unique voice - a fusion of pop, rock and even jazz, incorporating hooks that will worm their way into your sub conscious and keep you coming back for more.
